WORKSHOP:
Saturday, October 7, 2023 10am – 12 noon On-Line ZOOM $30.00 Handouts and Zoom info will be emailed several days before the event and after completing registration and payment “Archibald MacDonald at Keppock” and “Bonny at Morn.” Archibald’s tune is easier than his name! It is a slow Scottish Air, composed in 1773 by Captain Simon Fraser, a violinist. “Bonny at Morn” (morning) has been said to be a hauntingly beautiful tune. The song refers to the new baby (bonny) waking up her parents very early in mornings. This Northumbrian traditional tune is a lullaby, and is also used as healing music. Karen’s workshop is 2 hours with time to practice as we go along. We will also take a short comfort break between the two tunes. |

WORKSHOP: Saturday, October 28th, 2023 9am-1pm Pacific Time (including short breaks) On-Line ZOOM $50.00 Zoom info will be emailed several days before the event and after completing registration and payment Karen's work in hospitals as a therapeutic musician has led to her developing an international repertoire that is soothing and warm – truly music from and of the heart. In this workshop Karen will use two tunes from her most recent solo recording “Celtic Shores - Beautiful Airs & Lullabies for Dreaming.” They will illustrate styles of playing and arranging that promote beauty, wellness and relaxation, utilizing the natural resonance of the hammered dulcimer. Hungan - a sweet Cornish lullaby in C with a wistful interlude / intro. Working in the sweet, tinkly, upper register of the dulcimer you’ll be introduced to chords that are open, with 9ths, and suspended 4ths - small changes that will make your arrangements particularly evocative. Vilalba - With this sweeping, expansive Galician processional from Vilalba, in addition to working with the chords, you will learn how to incorporate a warm pedal tone. The workshop will include wrap-up videos of the material.
